Description

“Expression of Memory” is a calendar with Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) that will only show you important dates from your life that correspond to your current emotional facial expression. To begin, you train the calendar on important dates from your life based on your emotional responses to those dates. Once trained, the A.I. will detect your emotional state based on your facial expression and respond with the date and time of the event in your life that corresponds to your current emotional state. For instance, if you smile at the screen, dates and media related to “happy” moments in your life will show up such as a past birthday, favorite vacation, wedding day, graduation, or other joyful. moments day in your life. If you frown or cry in front of the device, sad days may materialize such as a death in the family, when an injury occurred, or when the person lost their job.

System

The project uses artificial intelligence (A.I.) to detect someone’s expression and then translates their expression into it’s emotional equivalent. Prior to this interaction, a simple form is filled out by the participant that asks them to identify dates connected to important emotional events in their life such as their birthday, birth of a child, graduation, travel experience, death of a family member, etc. Once inputted, the system stores this data and will only display it if the expression it sees translates to that emotion.

Background

Over the years, several theorists have studied how emotional states can trigger old memories in individuals. These include Gordon H. Bower who’s studies in “Mood-Dependent Memory” proposed that emotional states in individuals can conjure up memories that match those states. In addition, Donald Hebb (1949) came up with “Hebb’s Principle” which suggests that repeated activation of neural pathways strengthens connections whereas emotions experienced during memories can make them easier to retrieve. Finally, Sigmund Freud’s work on emotional memory shows that strong emotional memories such as traumatic ones, can be initially repressed but later triggered by emotional cues. “Expression of Memory” functions as an emotional detection system that can tell how a person is feeling based on their facial expression and recall a memory that corresponds to this feeling.
