Today was the first day of the NIME conference (New Interfaces for Musical Expression) here in NYC. Above is a picture of one of the demos – a “saw controller” that when bent creates different sounds. Today I heard some of the first paper sessions, some interesting stuff about custom controller design and Perry Cook’s keynote entitled “Principles for Controlling Computer Music Designers” was a funny look back in time at the first keynote Cook gave at the conference where he said that “programmability is a curse” and other key components of NIME developments. Looking forward to the rest of the conference. Katherine Moriwaki and I will present our MIDI Scrapyard Challenge workshops there on Saturday morning. Cya at the conf!
